Question:

Do guinea pigs loose their teeth?

My guinea pig is biting everything in his sight. I don't think it's good for him because he can easily choke. He's even biting me. There's no blood or anything, but it's close and it really hurts! I'm wondering if they like loose their teeth or something. Maybe that's why he's biting everything. The only thing he doesn't bite is his stuffed guinea pig. I would please like to know why he's biting, and what I can do to prevent or stop his biting, and also if they loose their teeth and if so, at what age? Thank You!

  1. How old is he? I don't think they lose their teeth. My guinea pig was 2 months old when I got her and she never lost hers, but since she was a little older I'm not sure.

  2. I've had some for a while, never seen them lose any teeth, but I might not notice since their teeth are so small.

  3. Guinea Pigs normally do not bite.  In nearly 40 years of judging Guinea pigs I've been bitten only once (and that was through stupidity on my part!) .  You can expect trouble if you try to separate fighting animals but GPs are normally not aggressive to humans.  You may need to socialize your GP some since they are social animals by nature.  If you take it out regularly and sit it on a towel in your lap and feed it treats (go easy on the amounts) like clean grass, or leafy greens, it will gradually become glad to see you and be handled.

Guinea pigs WILL normally chew on all sorts of stuff to keep their teeth worm down.  Their teeth are open rooted which means that, unlike our teeth, they grow throughout its lifetime and they must receive some wear to keep them from over growing,  In general, the pellets and hay they eat does a pretty good job of this wearing down.  Even so, pigs will rattle on their cage wire, chew on any hard play toys you put in their cage or any wooden structures to which they have access.  There are safe "chew sticks" available in pet stores that you can put in the cage.

  4. As far as I know guinea pigs do not lose their teeth. All rodents like to gnaw on things because it helps them wear their teeth down. Put some wooden toys or sticks in his cage for him to gnaw on. That way, he will be less tempted to bite you. Also, consider putting a sweatshirt on before you play with your furry friend.

  5. try gettin her diff chew toys maybe she doesnt like the one she has now

  6. give him an empty towelpaper roll to chew on. there teeth grow like  our finger nails they chew to keep them health so they can eat. if he bites you you firmly say NO they learn that pretty quick.
