I am going to a wedding reception this weekend wearing a kilt and my female cousin said that I should learn how to curtsy because you curtsy when wearing a kilt and don't bow (because she said the back of the kilt would then rise up and show your **** and that would be rude). Is this true or is she BSing me?

  1. I have never heard of any man curtsying for any reason.  Bow a shallow bow.  Kilts are not that short.  You won't be showing anything.  And you won't feel embarrassed by curtsying like a girl.

  2. If I ever saw a man curtsy , I'd slap him up the back of the head.

    Take a bow boy!

  3. Your cousin is BSing you. Unless you bow with your head nearly scraping the floor, there should be no danger of showing your backside while bowing.

I am assuming you will be wearing a "traditional" filleadh-beag (Irish Gaelic for "kilt"; literally "small kilt", the kind which extends from waist to knee). I have, and wear on occasion, a "Great Kilt", which also goes to the knee -- and drapes around the upper body, as well -- and my backside never shows when I bow. Unless I ***want*** it to. :-P

  4. Ha ha!

You bow, but not too low.  Kilts aren't THAT short that you can't do a shallow bow.

Men don't ever curtsy in any social setting for any culture.

  5. A traditional kilts length goes to the knees. Bowing is not a problem.
