Do gypsy moth caterpillars eat tree bark or tree leaves?

I found a caterpillar at my aunt's house and wonder if it was eating bark or leaves...thanks

  1. The gypsy moth is famous for its ability to defoliate.  So the answer is leaves.  There are not any caterpillars that eat bark.  If you have something you think eats bark it is probably a beetle larvae.
