  1. no they only sleep a long time

  2. Yes, hamsters can go into hibernation if they get cold enough.  Syrian hamsters can be more prone to it as they are originally from a very warm part of the world.

During hibernation, the metabolism slows way down so the animal can basically "turn off" for the winter.  Hibernation in hamsters is triggered by a sudden drop in temperature.  This can also occur with even just a little change combined with little food and water.  Hammies can fall into hibernation in a matter of hours, so during the cold months you should check your little guy a few times a day to make sure this hasn't happened.  Keep the cage out of drafts, and if your room tends to be colder than the rest of the house, you might need to move him/her to a different space for the winter.  If it's really cold, you can buy an under tank heating pad for snakes/lizards to use.

How can you tell if your hammie is hibernating?  At first, it will appear your hammie is dead, but upon further inspection, you can see he/she is slightly breathing, though slowly.  The hamster will be very limp (not stiff, like it's dead) and icy to the touch.

To get a hamster out of hibernation, you need to gradually warm him/her up and hydrate.

  3. In the wild some species will, however you pet won't go into hibernation as long as the temperature of the room they're kept in doesn't go below 38 degrees Fahrenheit.

  4. NO, hamsters don't hibernate..Sometimes, it happens it stays in the cage for a long period of time, but that does not mean they are into a hibernation. They retire into inactivity, depending on the temperature of the cage or the room as general. You can check all information about hamesters on this website here http://www.hamster-zone.com

  5. No. Depending on what type of hamster you get, they sleep at different times... some are nocturnal, some just sleep little and often. They don't hibernate though.
