Do hermit crabs need a lid on their crabitat?

Good Evening,

The crabitat would be about 16" high, thinking about 3-4 crabs. So is a lid necessary? I guess what I am asking is: would the crabs climb out of the tank if it didn't have a lid?

And how high would the climb? i.e. (I would have 2" of sand, and a four inch stick/toy)

  1. If the cage is made out of metal mesh yes but f it is like an aquarium no.

  2. yes you need a lid because the crabs can climb the sealing on the side of the tank or anything and escape!

  3. If you have them in a aquarium and no sticks or limbs with in 3-4 inches of the top they won't get out.

You basically just need to make sure there is nothing they can cling to and pull themselves out.

At the stores I've seen them at they don't have lids.... Just a Plexiglas sided enclosure with a chicken wire tube in the middle for them to climb... extra shells, sand, food, water and a few sticks or limbs..

  4. They will absolutely climb out of the tank.  They can climb as high as 100 feet.

  5. Yes.  Not only will they climb out (don't discount them using each other at stepping stones!), but you need to maintain some level of humidity inside the tank to keep them completely happy and healthy.

  6. they would prabobly climb out.i had 2 hermit crabs and one of them some how climbed out and a few days later my mom found it in the basement three flights down from where i kept my crab.my tank is prety tall i think its 14" so i highly suggest you do.

  7. my main worry isnt the chance of them climbing out its keeping humidity in

hermit crabs need humidity it will all escape if the thing has no lid
