depends on who makes it, my grandparents (south louisiana) banned those games in their house because they believed in them. Especially the homemade versions.

They only really work if you believe in them, I don't.

Yes: When I was sixteen we wrapped a Billy Idol record in white paper (it was about the right size).  l wrote the letters on the paper in marker, and used a glass as the planchette; it worked fine.

In the early part of the last century people made their own boards all the time.

You mean, do they successfully move in a party when someone moves it?  Or if you make a prop for a show or prank, does it tend to work?  I would say it all depends on how it's made (for the latter) or if you have a good prankster in the group.

Ouija boards are something you should not mess with. Have you seen the excorcest? well thats one way that you can get possed by using one is like inviting a ghost for some tea and cookies. Not always a good idea.
