  1. Yes, horses do lay down, but it's not a natural position for a horse to be in for an extended period of time.

When a horse feels secure, like if they are in a herd or in a stall, they are more likely to lay down.  Foals will lay down to sleep more frequently than older horses.  Many horses will lay down during sunny days to "sun bathe" but they most likely won't be down for more than two hours at a time.

A horse can't physically lay down for hours on end.  Digesition and blood flow are slowed down while a horse is lying down, making them more prone to colic, laminitis, and founder (if down for looong stretches at a time).

Usually a horse will lay down for about twenty to forty-five minutes at a time, especially when in a stall.  They will take short naps lying down, get up and walk around, then go back to sleep, either on their feet or laying down.  This most often happens at night when a barn is quiet.

  2. Yes, horses do lay down. However, they cannot lay down for long periods because just the weight of their bodies would damage their intestines and inhibit lung function. The average horse weighs about 1200 pounds.

Horses can lay down for brief periods of rest, for giving birth or for just a roll in the hay (horses like to roll because it helps scratch the itches they can't reach).

Also, after giving birth, the mare usually gets up within a few minutes. The foal should be on it's feet and nursing within an hour after birth.

  3. Yes they do but not very often as others have said.

  4. i think i know but i dont want to say the wrong answer

  5. Horses are not built to lie down in any position for an extended period of time. This is true of many large animals, actually, including elephants, hippos, rhinos, and cattle. In fact, if your horse goes down, it can be a bad sign. The horse might just be enjoying taking a little weight off its feet or getting some cool shade for a little bit, but if the horse cannot stand back up, the horse will die due to compression of the internal organs. Standing for a horse is a matter of life and death.

  6. Yes, our horses do every night. They are perfectly happy and healthy, and they have no problems with colic, founder, or any other disease.
