  1. omg. i hvant heard that one. but no. my family owns a bundle of horses and in my whole 15 years ive learned that the names come from the horses pedigree aka their family tree.

  2. Of couse they do and it`s not just horses with stupid names !

    Cricketers have them too, anybody remember the Commentators at a match between England and West Indies

    saying  "the batsman`s Holding, the bowlers Willie" ?

  3. Most people name their horses according to the names of their sire and dam (father and mother).

    Other people always use a certain prefix (For example the Westbrook family always name their horses starting with "Bollin", after the river that runs through their family estate).

    Sheikh Maktoum (of Shadwell Farm) usually names his horses in Arabic, which can cause pronunciation problems.

    There are a lot of rules you have to comply with to name a racehorse.  Some of these are:

    1. The name can be no longer than 18 characters, including spaces;

    2.Names on the Register of Horse Names, or names of horses that have won a major race CANNOT be reused.

    3. The meaning, pronunciation or spelling of the name cannot be offensive or insulting.

    My favourite name at the moment is a horse called TARTATARTUFATA!  I have heard many different pronunciations of his name (most of them extremely comical!).  I personally opt for Tarta-Tartu-Fata!

  4. soemtimes its actually the breeder that decides the name of the horse then when an owner buys it thats the way it stays.

    im convinced some of them are in the hope of the commentator messing up, its kinda cruel cause the commentator could lose thier job.

    but its funny for ppl watching on tv in the bookies or in the pub!!!

    :D

  5. Some people are better at picking names than others. Some try to be funny and fall flat, and some name horses after people or places that are special to them but make no sense to the rest of us. And some people have to name a heck of a lot of horses each year and just can't be bothered to come up with anything good.

    Asking why some racehorses are have stupid names is like asking why dome dogs have stupid names. They just do. ;)

  6. the names of horses is derived from the breeder and buyer of the horse.  In most cases, the name will represent something special to the owner and something special to the public.  If the name of the horse is difficult to pronounce, then the horse committee that aproved the name of the horse will contact the apropriate people to have the anouncer say its name correctly.

    Usually when an anouncer says the horses name, that pronounciaton stands at that track.  :)
