  1. No.  Horses have huge eyes with lots of cones and they have an amazing ability to adjust to different levels of light.  Night lights could actually be an irritant for them.

  2. No horses have exceptional night time vision.

Have you ever seen wild mustangs with flashlights?

  3. Nope, they can actually see much better at night than humans can. The only thing that interferes with their night vision is the contrast from light to dark (like walking from the lit barn out into the dark paddock)

  4. I don't think so. Like before we domesticated horses, wild ones didn't have a light source. But I don't really know, I don't have horses.

  5. Horses’ night vision is generally superior to that of humans. Horses have a reflective panel on the retina that helps to gather all available light at night. However, horses have a much lower sense of color than people. While they can distinguish green and blue, a horse’s sight is mostly in shades of gray.

  6. No.  Our horses are out all night and they graze, run, etc.

  7. no they dont... they see just find in the dark

  8. no

  9. no, you do not need to put them under lights at night.  Show people, however will often extend the hours of "day"light that horses have during show season.

  10. no. in the wild horses dont get any. they have spectacular ears to spot dangers and stuff. when our horses are in the barn we turn the lights off completely and they are fine.

  11. YES, THEY NEED A LIGHT SOURCE!

Shut them in a stall in total darkness with no windows, and they'll be unhappy.

The "light source" need be nothing more than a window at the end of the hall that lets in starlight, but they do need that.

  12. no actully they dont they see alot better at night than humans

  13. Watch the movie "Seabiscuit"!

  14. Trick question.  No they do not need an additional (other than natural) light source at night.  However, be aware that being prey animals a horses behavior will often change at night.  They typically become more cautious.  Because of this many horses will not load into a trailer at night even though they load fine in the same trailer during the day.  Thus many people have a small light in their trailer to shed some light so that their horses will load without a fuss.  The same thing can happen with a dark stall or even a barn if the horse can not see into the shadows.

The light is then shut off after the horse enters and it is in the shadows too (It can usually see then).
