  1. We hosted a foreign exchange student, and in the program we participated in there was no monetary compansation at all. However, the experience that the opportunity affords the host family is priceless. Of course the student is the recipient of many benefits as well but as a host family, my two children and wife and I relished the experience to interact with another human being on such an intimate stage.; It was a lifetime experience and one that I would recommend to any family that could afford to board another child . Compensation as you infer was not there but there was a definite payback in other terms

  2. It depends on what country you are living in. I know that in Ireland and England it is popular for families to receive money. In the US, where I live, families do not receive money.  My family and I have hosted students for  five years and have thoroughly enjoyed it. I hope you are considering hosting, because it is a great experience, but do know that deciding to be a host family should be because you want to share  your culture and language with a student, while welcoming them into your home and treating them like a member of the family. If that's what you want then please host!

  3. It depends. We have hosted for over six years. Four in Southern California and two years in Nashville, TN. Our 1st experience was with a student with AFS. He stayed with us for 11 months and went to high school with our sons. We did not get any money for this, but could take a $50 a month charity deduction off our taxes. So we listed a $550 donation to AFS. During his stay with us, I found out there are schools that teach foreign students English. The schools are ALWAYS looking for host families. These schools pay you. In CA, we got a check and that was that. But with school, ELS out of NJ, we are with now in TN, we get a 1099 for the money we get. This sucks, but with a good tax guy and good records on your part, most of the money you get is tax deductible as expenses on a business. We are currently getting paid $585 for a four week session. In exchange, we provide a private room, wireless Internet, two meals a day, daily conversations and non private bathroom. The student goes to school five days a week. My students take the bus to and from school. We love providing this service.

  4. no because their child is going too to the other families home so there is no point
