Question:

Do hotels with ever eager ground staff irritate the heck out of you?

I sometimes have to stay in a hotel that have employees that open the door for you and expect you to slip them a few bills. There are hotels what have busboys (sorry, I don't know the exact PC designation) that would even open the doors of cabs for you. Insist upon carrying your bags for you to the room. There are hotels that will not let you carry the luggage troley yourself. You must let the employees do that. I am a do-it-yourself kind of person. I can do without all these services. In fact to me they are not servicess, they are nuisence.

I am expected to pay the busboys each time they do for me I don't need them to do and I don't even know what is customary. If you do't regularly slip them bills, they start giving you looks and I am sure badmouth you among themselves.

I do not mind spending money but to me this is extortion. Why should I pay for a service I did not ask for and don't need? Why should I have to feel cheap if I stand my ground and do't pay?

  1. Yes, it is irritating.  I like to know they are there if I need them, but only when I need them.

Don't feel obligated to tip, if you don't ask for their service.  They get paid by their employer its not your job.  However, if you need the bell hop to help you, slip him a couple bucks!
