  1. Here is a very important rule about all exotic pets.  Notice that we say cats are nice, or dogs are nice. However we use the term docile for exotic pets.   Ball Pythons and Rose Hair Tarantulas are docile, but they can and have bitten.   Geckos are usually docile, not nice.  This reminds us to respect all animals.  We do not want to get to relaxed.  If they did bite it would surprise you more than hurt, even though and older gecko could potentially break the skin.   They are not known as aggressive biters, but yes they can bite and will if the feel provoked.  And if they got out they are almost never gonna be found.  Alive anyways.  They are fast and they love to hide.  and most homes are not adequate for a gecko on the lose, nor is the average climate outdoors suitable.  Good Luck Hope I helped.

  2. They will bite in self-defense, but it is pretty harmless.  A slightly bigger gecko can draw blood, but you're more likely to damage the house gecko's teeth than anything else.

If they get out there's a good chance you won't see them again.  They'll go somewhere warm where bugs are plentiful - under appliances, in the walls, outside.

Look for one that's alert, large, chubby, active, bright eyes, clear nostrils, strong markings, and has an intact tail (not regrown).
