Do humans have a nuchal crest? What about other primates?

I want to know if humans, gorrillas, chimps and orangutans have nuchal crests. We had an anthro lab and I think I wasn't quite clear what a nuchal crest was at the time, but I can't reexamine the skulls now. The labs are due on Wed... thanks!

  1. I've found a marsupial with a nuchal crest, but nothing considering humans, apes, or monkeys.

  2. Humans and other primates do have nuchal crests on the occipital, but obviously the human nuchal crest is quite a bit smaller than a primate one since they're much more robust then we are.  But nuchal crests in humans are actually a good indicator of the s*x of a person, since males tend to have a more robust nuchal crest than females.

  3. The nuchal crest is a ridge of bone that protrudes from the top of non human primate skulls. The crest attaches to large jaw muscles that the more robust members of the family posses. Gorillas have the largest, also called sagittal crest.
