  1. Yes, many hybrid vehicles will shut off the gas engine at speeds lower than 20mph. It's where you car uses most of it's gas, during idle and accelerating.

  2. yes and no.  It depends on the charge of the batteries.  If the batteries are low, then the engine will stay on to continue charging.  If the batteries have a full charge, then the gas motor will shut off, and the car will run off the electric until you get over 20mph.

I'm sure that this changes some with the different models.

    good luck.

  3. No, they do not. Otherwise, you'd have to turn the key and start it up at every stop sign.

What most hybrids do is run on a battery during certain types of driving and alternate with the gasoline. But never does the entire vehicle stop.

  4. It depends on how the hybrid is set up, and the state of charge of the batteries.  Most hybrids are set up to stop the gasoline engine engine when the vehicle comes to a stop.

  5. Hi,

actually, it depends on whether you have the air conditioning on or not.

All currently available hybrid trucks are a partial or mild hybrid, meaning they cannot move without the gas engine running.

However, with the air conditioning turned off, even a mild hybrid will turn off the gas engine at a full stop and immediately turn it back on again when the accelerator is pressed.

Yes, I know Chevy is looking to come out with their new hybrid system in the Silverado, but that isn't commercially available yet. And until I get a chance to drive one and see how it performs in the real world (unlikely in the Chicago region beacuse GM's new hybrids are only available in limited markets), I will not comment on how well it works.

If the air conditioning is turned on on a partial or mild hybrid, the gas engine must run because the air conditioning compressor is linked to the gas engine.

On a full hybrid, the air conditioning system and the heat pumps are not linked to the gas engine, they are electric only. The gas engine does not have to run to have full air air conditioning.

BTW, accelerator-linked gas engine shut-off is not new. Volkswagen had a system like this more than a decade ago, but it never caught on in a big way because people didn't see a need when gas was $1.30 a gallon.

  6. No they do not stop but they they are very quite.
