Unlike other car audio questions, mine isnt to have the loudest system on the road, but just to be a step above the factory-installed speakers. That being said, if all i want to do is put in new front door speakers and rear deck speakers that are rated at 4 Ohms, rms 35w and peak 220w, is an amp really necessary?

(the head unit im getting is a Sony xPlod CDX-GT420U)

  1. no you do not need a amp as long as the head unit is good as long as its a 50x4 watts with mosfet you will be good no need to buy a amp buddy dont worry

  2. CD player with built-in amplifier (17 watts RMS/52 peak x 4 channels) thats the specs for your model.not much power when split into 4 speakers. a small amp say 200x4 would be a nice sound for you it would push 50 watts per channel instead of 17.i would suggest one..steve PS..MAX RMS IS 50 BUT YOULL HAVE THE VOLUME UP HIGH TO GET SOUND NOT GOOD ON HEAD UNIT GETS HOT QUICK

  3. I agree with Steve. A nice small amp will do you justice. Its nice to be able to use the speakers that you have. But once again. If you do you'll be using that to the max with the volume up high, so that temperature on the head unit will be spicy... and by that I mean hot.

    haha.

    most of all..

    have fun with it!

    ;)

  4. Reading your question, and understanding what you want and what you expect from your system, the answer your question simply... NO you do not NEED an amp.
