Do i have a fever..??

Question

My temps were usually 97.5ish degrees. today at the doctors, my temp was about 99.something...my sleeping schedule have chnaged could this be the cause?? what could cause the rise in temp??

Yes it can because the doctor is supposed to take your temp. after you have been in room temp. for 30 mins. No fever is usually 100.0+

well it can change your temp so maybe u got a fever or u got dehydrate!!!

Text book fever on the hospital floor is typically 100.4 unless someone is Neutropenic (lacking an immune system essentially) then we get excited over less.  However, most people do not have a basal body temperature of 98.6. That's just the average and we base the 100.4 number off of 98.6.  For me, I know that I'm running a fever at 99, even 98.6, because I normally run 97.4-97.8.  It is a tad individual, but unless you have some risk factors to determine otherwise, they typically wait until you hit 100.4 before they get too worried about it being a fever.

Many people can tell even without a reading if their body temperature is elevated. For me my breath feels hot in my throat and my skin is hypersensitive.  If I'm actively spiking a fever (climbing up fast) I shiver and feel cold.  If I'm recovering from a fever- dropping temp- then I'm hot and even sweat.  

Many things can cause a slight elevation in body temperature. Warmer weather, sleeping under blankets, dehydration, stress, pain, caffeine, sitting in a hot tub or sauna, exercise, and so on.  Depends on you.  A change in sleeping schedule is a form of stress- I often run low grade fever when I'm short on sleep- so that is most certainly a possibility.

And being outside in the heat could raise it, too.  

I wouldn't worry about 99 unless you felt yucky and started to feel chilled, and got uncontrollable shivers. This is a sign you're spiking up higher, but typically a low grade fever like that without other symptoms will resolve on it's own without any major distress on the body.

It's good you're aware of what's normal.  Keeping in tune to your body's norms and how it reacts will help you detect a problem earlier and hopefully know when to seek treatment BEFORE it's a major ordeal. Take care!

P.S.  Elevation in body temperature is also a normal and healthy defense mechanism, even when sick. It's when it spikes out of control and doesn't come down that it becomes a problem. Some bacteria release toxic substances, either as a byproduct of metabolism or as they die, that are pyrogenic- meaning they cause an elevation in body temperature.  So often when we have a bad bacterial infection we raise the temperature to help the body fight off the infection, but the infection also causes an increase in temperature and then we're too high.  That's when fevers are a problem and deserve attention. Low grade fevers are a natural, healthy, and necessary response and shouldn't be medicated for (or worried about) unless someone is immune compromised or the fever gets over 102.
