Do i have to call my ISP if I buy a new modem?

My modem from ISP get broken and I'm no longer covered with warranty. Can I just buy any cable modem from Wal mart anbd use it? And do i have to call them to activate the modem or something?

  1. No.  Just make sure you configure the modem to the ISP correctly and all will be fine.


  2. You absolutely can use any modem\modem-router you wish to use. As long as you have your username and password that was provided to you when you signed up with your ISP then you've got no worries. People forget that these details sit on your modem, not your PC.

    Most modems these days have really easy to follow instructions or even a disc with a wizard on it that does everything for you.

  4. Depends if it's a DSL modem or a Cable modem.

    If it's a DSL modem, no, you should be fine just plugging it in and configuring it with your username and password (if any).

    A cable modem is different. Since it uses the DOCSYS protocols, the MAC address of the modem must be changed on your account so that it's active in your ISPs system. If you just plug it in, it wont work.

    If you're talking about a plain old dial up modem, then the answer is also no. Just just have to setup the modem on your system and tell your dialing software to use that modem or COM port and you're set.
