or is it so simple that i could do it myself, the reason is becuse iv just found out i have a loose connection in my hallway when somebody stands on a certain part of the floor the connection is lost, so i would like to fix it myself for as cheap as poss, or would it be easier just to move the box to the front door and run an extension cable, as i only use internet and phone on 1 socket box.

  1. You can do it yourself as long as you work on the house side of the main box.  The main box and the wiring to it belong to BT.

Youve probably just got a loose connection.  Take the front off the box and push each of the wires firmly down into their holders

  2. If you are able to take the top off the 1st connection box the one before the box you connect your phone in to and see if the cables have little spade connectors on them if they do then it means the box your phone plug into is the master socket which means the problem is for bt to sort out or your supplier but if the 1st box is a telephone box and the cable then spurs off to your plug in point that is your responsibility and you can repair it yourself as bt or supplier will charge you at least £75.00 to fix the fault and it is a easy repair you could do yourself bits would cost about £10.00

  3. If the fault is on the "line side" of the BT Master Linebox then they will fix it for you free.

If the fault is because of an extension then you will either have to fix it yourself or pay for it to be done.

You can check if it's an extension by following the wire. If you have no extensions then call BT and tell them that you have an itermittent connection at the linebox.

Don't try and be too explicit when you're talking to the person to report the fault. They're probably in India, will not be technicial and won't understand what you're talking about. All that the person will want to do is to record that you are reporting a fault.

You MUST emphasise that it's intermittent and you need a techincian to visit you or they'll just do a remote "line check" and tell you that there is nothing wrong.

BT Customer service is probably the worst of all the Privatised Utilities and getting worse every year. I wish you good luck and don't let them fob you off.

  4. The box, wire and socket you have described belong to BT Openreach.

You must NOT alter or change these.

If you do AND make a complete mess of it, then decide to call BT Openreach, they will charge you for the time taken to sort out the problem and for the cost of supplying new sockets or wire or boxes. Costing you probably twice as much as if you'd called them in the first place.

If you call BT now before attempting it yourself there may not even be a charge !

  5. From what you are saying it sounds to me that the line fault is on the extension from the BT box at your door. If that is the case then if you call out BT they will certainly charge you for the visit, what I would do first is check the connections in each box, as it sounds as if the cable is being stretched when somebody walks over the section of floor.

The other thing you could do is run a new cable yourself, all you would have to do is copy exactly the wire colours in each box to their relevant connections, or buy an extension lead that will plug into the BT box.
