Question:

Do i have to go through customs if I fly the same airline on two flights but go to three countries?

Example:

Scenario 1: I fly from Cambodia to Bangkok and then have a layover and fly to Hong Kong. This would all be in the same day on the same airline.

Scenario 2: I fly from Cambodia to Bangkok and then have a layover and fly to Hong Kong. This would on two different airlines.

Where would I have to go through customs in each scenario? Where do I have to go through security in each scenario? Just Hong Kong? Just Cambodia? Or More than one place?

  1. You normally do not clear customs as long as you stay within the transit area, but will need to clear security again when you transfer from the arrivals level to the departure level at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok. The airport here is one giant building and there is no need to transfer between terminals where you would have to clear customs like in some other airports. You will need to clear customs at your final destination. Whether you're on the same airline or not, you usually can stay within the transit area to complete any arrangements if necessary.

  2. Also note if you have seperate e tickets i.e one e ticket Bkk - Phnom Penh and then another onwards, you would need to collect your bags and check in again, therefore going through customs

  3. Generally customs is just in your final destination. Sometimes, if you are switching airlines, you'll have to get your bags and recheck them. Depending on the setup of the airport, that may require going through customs. Inquire with the airline about that.

In the US, security is just in the departing destination, but some countries have security at the gate instead. With some airport layouts, you'll have to leave one terminal and enter another, which could require going through security, but that's pretty unusual for international travel.

  4. If you are a TRANSIT passenger, you do not have to go thru customs.  Follow the signs.  You cannot leave the TRANSIT areas.
