Do i have to take my 03 beetle convertible to the dealership to get the battery changed?

i heard something about a code that you need to have beause the transmition will shut itself down if there isent an electrial sorce present when removing the battery??? Can I not take it to sears or walmart or pep boys or something??? I need it done today and the dealership is booked!!

No. But you will need to find a shop who knows VW. Adapting the power-train systems is not much of a problem if you know what you are doing. Find a local independent and you should have no problems.
