Question:

Do i have water in the forks of my stp?

i have an 06 model giant stp 1 and i think i have water in my forks. every time i apply weight on them they make a squieshey sound and it sounds like they are full of water. if so, is this bad? and if i can fix it, how? plz plz plz reply i love my bike and it's only a couple of weeks old.

  1. If you have oil forks, you might just be hearing the fork oil burbling through the internals.  You normally hear it on the rebound, but some forks are noisy on compression, too.  

    Yes.....if you do have water in there, it's bad, and you want to have a shop flush and change the oil pretty soon.   There are some parts that can rust, but it's not usually a huge deal with most forks.  It makes the fork feel like c**p, though, and your bike mechanic will be unhappy as he tries to clean out all the sludge!  

    An easy way to check is to take the front wheel off the bike and turn the bike upside down.  Let it sit for a minute, then cycle the forks a few times.  If there's water in there, it will usually be forced out past the stanchion seals and you'll see it squirt or dribble.  If something comes out, touch it and rub it between your fingers to see if it's watery or oily.   If it's black, go get your oil changed no matter if there's water in it or not!   :o)
