I have a 1988 acura legend with a 200 amp alternator. I have a 1000 watt rms 4 channel amp and a 4000 watt rms 2 channel amp which is only hooked up to a 1000 watt rms sub. I have a extreme heavy duty kinetik battery under the hood and a 1.5 farad cap in the trunk. I am wondering should I replace my cap with a 5 farad because my lights are dimming still (after a hard hitting song play for about 2 mins) when pretty much at max volume. does anyone have a solution?

  1. Everyone asks this question about dimming lights...Anyone who knows anything about car audio will tell you this---You need to upgrade to "The big 3" before adding more than 900w to your stock alt.A cap is useless stuff they sell, that does nothing to inprove car audio sound...It is a waste of money...upgrade your battery also---You can do "The big 3" plus get a new battery for less than a 5 farad cap cost.

  2. Put the kinetik in the trunk and a yellow top optima under the hood. The kinetiks can be mounted in any position. Also like the other person said make sure upgraded the big 3. Grounds to battery and power wire to alternator.

  3. You can have a 500 amp/hr alternator, but your battery can only store what its capacity allow.  Your alternator will cut-off and stop sending more juice to your battery.

Yes, an extra high capacity battery to dedicate to your amp will be much better.  Don't fry your car, making sure it is mounted correctly and placed inside a vented housing inside your trunk.

    Good listening!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. i would go with another battery, add a optima battery to what u have and u should be ok.

  5. Check these sites out...it is a good reference.

If your headlight dims with the bass notes, the “BIG 3” might work.  If not an H.O. alternator will be needed, or else be prepared to pour a lot of $$$ for batteries.

This site explains the "BIG 3" upgrades.

  6. I assume you put a 200 amp alternator in? That is definitely not a stock amperage. Also, did you upgrade the "big three" as well, although you have a high output alternator, it is limited by the conductors carrying the current. If you have the stock alternator wire, and grounds you are not going to be able to pull the amount of current required. Adding a battery is not going to solve the problem. More on the "big three" here.
