Do i need a car in Sydney? ?

I'm moving there and want to know how much people can rely on public transport. I know it will depend on which area i live/work, but in general, is it quite easy to get around Sydney without a car (like in London for example?)

thanks!

  1. Yes as long as you don't live to far from where you work

  2. It's not AS good as London, but it's really not hard to get around.  Lots of friends only use their cars to go away at weekends and use public transport the rest of the time.  It's easy to get into and out of the city from just about anywhere.  But if you need to get from outside the city, to somewhere else outside the city it may take a while.

  3. if you live close to the shops and your work , then you can just use public transport :)

  4. If you are living in or near the city it is the same as London, you can use the train or bus, to get to and from work, trains usually run close in times. You only need a car if you want to get out of the city and go somewhere.

Most suburbs have shopping centres where you can buy most things with out moving out of your suburb, i lived in the Eastern suburbs for three years and every thing is there from big shops to super markets

i hardly ever used my car there

  5. It really depends on how much of Sydney you want to see / experience. The public transport system is mediocre and at times unreliable. Also as Sydney is very large you will be limited in terms of socialising. The first thing most people do in Sydney when they turn 16 is get their licence and buy a car.

Can you survive without a car, of course everyone can. But it will limit you in terms of what you can do, where you can go and how long it will take.

  6. Public transport is fine.. BUt if you're working, it depends how far it is, and if any buses or trains are near by..

I need a car to work, because I live in the South West of Sydney, where the public transport is c**p.

But it is easy to get around without a car.. But public transport is kind of expensive..

  7. Yes, you can rely on public transport easily.  If you live close to the CBD it's not really a problem.  I walked to work and got the train home (one stop) or a taxi depending on how tired I was.  You don't need a car at all and traffic in the city is horrendous and parking expensive.

  8. Its fairly easy, yes. Most people have cars though.
