  1. Your best choice of caliber for self-defense is the tried, true, tested, and proven to be the best no nonsense man stopper is the 357 Magnum.*..

  2. Ultimately that depends on what State of the Union you live in.  Laws vary from State to State.  Example:  In Texas if you qualify with a revolver you can only carry a revolver.  If you qualify with a semi-automatic you can carry either one.  Carry caliber is not specified but you may be required to qualify with a center-fire to avoid using lead bullets in an indoor range.  All .22 LR rounds are of lead nose design and therefore disqualified at indoor ranges because lead, a heavy metal poison, can into the air conditioning system.  Check with your instructor about the legalize of carrying a .22 once you obtain your CCW permit.

    Good luck.

  3. pick your state and read the rules and regs . . . most states have different regulations. A lot of states require you to show competency with the weapon you will use by qualifying with it . . .  a 22 may not meet the requirements

  4. You're gonna need a bigger gun.

  5. A Walther P22 is a handgun, no matter how weak or inappropriate some people think it is,  to carry it concealed you must have a concealed handgun permit unless you live in Alaska or Vermont

If your state mandates that the test be taken with a .32 or higher it is because their permit does not restrict you to the gun that you test with and they are following the mantra of .32 being the least acceptable caliber for self defense

They don't want people coming in training with 22s and not being capable of handling harder recoiling weapons

( That theory sounds stupid enough to me to be an actual government policy)

  6. It's impossible to answer your question without knowing what state you live in.  I live in Alaska - anyone can carry concealed here without a permit.

If you are hunting - most all states allow for you to carry a pistol and have it covered - coat, shirt, etc for protection from the elements.

If you are carrying your P22 for personal protection from people - you need to go bigger my friend.  I have 30+ years of competition and concealled carry experience - how good your aim is does not matter a hoot in a fight/flight situation.  (consider this - big shoot out in LA last year with 107 rounds fired by police and bad guys - nobody hit).  When your round does hit it's mark in a combat situation - good chance it isn't going to be in a disabling area - so having a heavier round other than a 22 is what's needed.

On a scale of 1 to 100 carrying a 22 auto concealed for protection is a minus number because it will cause you more trouble than it would ever solve.  Good chance someone will notice it - and smack you up the side of the head with a pipe just to steal the gun.  People tend to conceal their centerfire pistols better than 'just a 22'.  The holster I wear for my XD costs more than the P22.

    Hope this helps!

  7. It depends on what state you are in.

I think once you pass the state level requirements you'll be able to carry your .22 although it's a really light caliber for self defense.

I think the .32 requirement you are talking about is in place so people need to use a centerfire cartridge for any training courses required to get the permit.

  8. well depends on were you live to carry you co here in texas but some states you do just to own a gun i own alot of guns but i do not carry

  9. Yes, you need a CHL to carry.

Killing hogs with a .22, while it makes you a good shot, doesn't prepare you for someone attacking you. There's a big difference between a hog and a human. Hogs don't shoot back! It's better to carry a larger caliber pistol than to depend on accuracy when you're in deep and the only thing you can do is defend yourself with deadly force.  Even a heart shot with a .22 isn't an immediate stopping shot. A .38 loaded with hollow points hitting the chest will stop anyone from continuing the fight.
