Do i need a passport to drive to mexico and drive back into the u.s.? or will a DL work by itself?

As the law is right now you either have to:

1.  Have a passport to re-enter the U.S. or

2.  Have a  driver's license and a birth certificate (certified     copy) to re-enter the US.

CURRENTLY:

U.S. citizens need to present either (a) a passport, passport card (available in spring 2008), or WHTI-compliant document; or (b) a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, along with proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate.

LATER:

On June 1, 2009, the U.S. government will implement the full requirements of the land and sea phase of WHTI.  The proposed rules require most U.S. citizens entering the United States at sea or land ports of entry to have a passport, passport card, or WHTI-compliant document.  

Summary, a dl will work until June 1, 2009.  At which point you will need a passport.

you only need a drivers license or state issued photo id .  I have done it many times to have a night out in Tijuana from San Diego

Laws have been changed recently and now a passport is needed.  In the past a DL was enough..but not anymore.
