  1. Strictly, no. Ireland and Britain are both in the 'Common Travel Area'.

If you go Stranraer-Belfast on the boat, then the train to Dublin you won't even be asked for ID of any kind.

If you are getting the plane, they will usually only accept a passport (some will accept expired ones) or a UK/Ireland driving licence WITH A PHOTO.  In theory, they often also have a huge list of other ID that virtually nobody has.

I just need to add a little to what Russia has to say. What he is referring to is called the Schengen Agreement. Ireland and Britain are the only parts of the EU not part of it. You do need a passport to go Ireland to France for example.

  2. No. Just a valid form of ID with photo. However, a passport is the best ID.

  3. No you don't because  Scotland is in E.U. and Ireland is in E.U. people hwo lived in E.U. don't need a passport two travel between the countries

  4. OK

Good answers,  and we have had this question many times...

There are tow aspects to this quesiton about travel between the Republic of Ireland and the UK

    1:  Immigration Control - Passport

You do not need a passport for immigrtation control betweeen the  Republic and the UK if you are a UK or Irish passport holder, as they have common travel agreements.

    2:  Security Control -  Identity

You will most likely need and offical form of ID to travel between the two, especially by air, and the airline may request a passport as proof of ID.

Please check with whoever you are travelling to see what their criteria are.

    See these links for examples.

    I'm a British citizen. Do I need a passport?

British citizens travelling to Northern or the Republic of Ireland do not need a passport but are advised to take a form of identity. Remember that the name on your passport must match the name on your booking, otherwise you may not be able to travel and your insurance may be invalid. Other passport holders should check with the relevant embassy regarding passport and visa requirements.

    Do my children need passports?

Children who were included on a passport before 5 October 1998 may continue to travel with the passport holder until the child reaches the age of 16 years; or the passport on which the child is included is replaced; or an amendment results in the issue of a new passport.

I'm a citizen on a non-EU country. Is there anything else I need to do?

You must check that you have all the documents required for entry into Ireland because otherwise you might be refused. If this happens we may be fined, and you will be liable for that fine under the Terms of Business.

My passport is close to its expiry date. What should I do?

If your passport is in the final year of validity you are advised to check the requirements of the country you are visiting before you make final travel plans. This is because some countries state that immigrant passports must remain valid for a minimum period after the date of entry (typically six months).
