If you are a UK resident i think you just need some form of photo ID, not necessarily a passport.

You will need a passport as a form of Identification when travelling and also when you book into an hotel.

From where???  Northern Ireland is part of the UK, so anyone living in England, Wales or Scotland would not need a passport.  However, many airlines including Easyjet do require a passport even on internal flights, so that is something to bear in mind.

Edit - some confusion here - are you going to Northern Ireland (UK) or Dublin in Southern Ireland (Eire)? They are two different countries so maybe you need to clarify your question.

I didn't need a passport to visit Dublin from the UK, but i did need some sort of photo ID.

Going to Northern Ireland from the Republic or Great Britain, then you just need photo ID for airlines etc. but it doesn't have to be a passport.

Travelling to Northern Ireland from anywhere else then you need either a passport or National ID card if EU citizen.

Where from?? From other parts of the UK, or from the Republic of Ireland when travelling overland, then no you don't. If you're flying then the airline may insist on seeing photo id, of which a passport is one of the more convenient forms.

Firstly, Dublin is not in Northern Ireland, it's in the Republic of Ireland (Eire)  Secondly, it depends where you're from!!!  If from UK, no.  Anywhere else, probably.
