Yes - even though NZ and Australia have a 'close relationship' they are separate country's, therefore you need a passport to enter.

It's about $200 for an adult, plus $15 to get photos done.

.... or next time you are at your local post office they have the application forms there.  Once you have your photos and want to submit your passport application make an appointment first with the Post Office as usually there is only one person per (post) office that deals only with passports.
