No need at all. You can travel there passport free. I have been there a couple of times on the ferry & British citizen's are exempt.

Yes you do, you may get away with picture ID if you are an EU citizen outside of the UK, but i dont recommend trying to travel without a passport....

No. You do not need a passport for that although it is not a bad idea to have it with you.

You should take your passport with you, irrespective of whether it is checked or not.  The republic of ieland and the UK are separate countries.  Both are in the EU, so there is freedom of movment for EU citizens.  You do not state in your question whether you are an EU citizen, but I assume you are.  In that case,  carrying a UK passport will be definitive proof that you do not require a visa to enter the irish Republic.  However, if you are an British citizen travelling from the uk it is unlikely that your passport will be checked on entry.

to Dunlaoire (South) Depending where you are traveling from .

if your going via northern Ireland you dont need a passport to cross the border to southern Ireland ..if your flying direct to southern Ireland then you do.

This is the correct answer:

If you go on a ferry then "no" you don't need a passport.

If you go by plane then "yes" - this is an airline policy due to security reasons and not a legal requirement.

I've travelled from UK directly to Southern Ireland by Ferry and Plane and that it just how it is!
