    There is no such country as 'Southern Ireland' - please do not call it that, or Éire, unless you are speaking in Irish. The name of the country is 'Ireland'.

  3. No. A passport is not needed only a valid form of ID. I bring my passport because it is really one of the best forms of ID but there have always been special relations between Ireland and the UK even before the EU got together and no passport was ever needed. Remember too that some airlines are more strict than others regarding what "valid" means. My friend was refused a Ryanair flight with a form of ID that had always been accepted by BMI.

  4. If you are flying from Britain, Yes of course you do, the Republic of Ireland is a different country so you therefore need a passport if flying there.  If you are flying to Northern Ireland (within the UK) and then driving into Republic you can get away with it.

I know for definite that if you are flying with Ryanair between the UK and Ireland, they will accept either a passport or photocard driving licence.  This is only if you are British.  But you should check with the airline or ferry service you are travelling with, as some may only accept passports.
