Do i need a passport when flying from ireland to england?

i live in england and going over to ireland with a friend helping her move but will be flying back alone do i need a passport or just picture id please help thanx xx

I have always had my passport checked when travelling between England and Ireland. Last time I went was in January.

This question is asked about once a week and every time there are loads of wrong answers!

You DON'T need a passport to get through the airport (a driver's licence will do) BUT your airline may require that you have a passport to validate your ticket. So check with your airline as to whether you need a passport or not.

No you do not need a passport, at least not with Aer Lingus or British Airways, although you do need photo ID (they list the acceptable forms with your booking information). The "Ireland Act 1949", passed by the British government in response to the Republic declaring independence, states (and I quote) "the Republic of Ireland is not a foreign country" for the purposes of British law. So they treat flights to the Republic as "domestic flights". My dad and I flew from Dublin to Heathrow and back just before Christmas, my dad's passport was expired so he used his driving licence.

Bottom line: check with the airline you want to buy the ticket from. Some airlines allow just photo ID, some want passports.

Aer Lingus say:

    * Irish passengers travelling to the U.K. are not required to carry their passport however it is still required to bring either a passport or some form of official photo identification when travelling to the U.K. You will often have to produce your passport when registering at hotels or cashing travellers cheques.

    * Passengers under 16 years travelling to the UK from Ireland, need not have their own passport or be named on their parent's passport, however it is advisable that they bring some form of identification (e.g. birth certificate, bus pass or student card) if possible. The following ID are accepted:

          o Valid Passport

          o Driver’s licence with photo

          o International student card

          o National ID card / Government issued photo ID cards

          o Health Insurance cards with photo / Social security cards with photo

          o Bus pass with photo

          o Work ID with photo

Check with your airline. If you have a passport, it is better bring it than be turned away because you don't have it.

I worry about people on this website. Rachel M who works for an airline for example.Anyway if your flying to or from Ireland you only need picture ID. I did it many times from London and Dublin before and after all the hype and it worked. I used my Irish driving licence. If you are concerned read down further the terms and conditions on your flight ticket an dit will tell you all. There's about 10 pages of the stuff but you'll know by that. Enjoy your trip!!

Depends on what the airline will accept as ID. Some take UK driving licence as long as it's got a photocard with it, some insist on a passport. Check with them.
