I am 20 years old, and I am wanting to get my permit so someone that is older than 21 can teach me how to drive LIGEALLY. People are telling me that I don’t need a permit to learn how to drive, that if I get pulled over because I am learning I will just say oh he’s teaching me. I’m telling him that’s not right; anyone out that can help would be GREAT! I am in San Antonio Texas, and just want to prove that you NEED a permit no matter how old you are if you are a FIRST TIME DRIVER and someone needs to teach the other person.

  1. Yes, you need a permit.  You CANNOT DRIVE WITHOUT A PERMIT OR LICENSE, regardless of age.

  2. Yes, you have to have a permit to be taught how to drive, and get in your practice time.  Being over 18 you won't need your parent's signature, and you won't have to be enrolled in school, but all the other requirements still apply.

Once you are confident in your skills you can take the test, you won't need to hold the permit for the 6 months like those under 18.

  3. If you are driving on a street you need a permit, to get your license you don't need to have had a permit prior to because of your age though.

  4. Since you are now 20, you no longer need to get a permit. You are eligible to get a regular drivers license when you turn 18. For how to go about it, read this page.
