I have a gainsborough mixer shower. I have a cistern with the hot water in the bathroom cupboard and the pressure on the shower is no good. Please help as I have no idea. The cold water tank is in the loft above the bathroom.

  1. all you need is to get a plumber to install a 3bar pump before the shower,it may require a sparky to put in a socket for it,(as long as the pump is in a cupboard next to tank and not in bathroom)i have same set up in my house, and i put in 3bar pump and it works great!goood luck

  2. First, check that the water tank in the loft is at the right water level ( about 35/40cms below the overflow outlet) vey often a bit of dirt in the ball valve can restrict the flow of water to the hot tank in the cupboard and starve the shower. of hot water.

  3. I have a Triton power shower that takes hot and cold feed (from the hot water tank, and the tank in the loft) and it has a little pump inside and a thermostat, it balances the pressures, controls the temperature, and really chucks the water out!

Because of the pump it's noisier than a standard 9kW electric shower (which eats electricity and tends to explode when faulty) but you don't notice it over the water.

*Plus* you can run it from an existing supply like a lighting circuit in the loft! It needs a 3A fused outlet.

You would need to get a plumber in to install a pump in-line in your existing set-up. You get pumps that pump both hot and cold simultaneously, but you might need to fit the pump in the loft.

  4. for your current system Yes

BUT if you were to replace your boiler with a combi boiler or simply remove the header tank and have your system converted to a mains pressure system ( a small pressure tank is added in place of header tank and fed direct form mains) then NO.

Since 1990 most/all plumbing system in the uK have been mains pressure systems without header tanks as that is 20th century technology!

it may cost you as much for a plumber to install a pressure pump as to convert your system to a mains pressure system. if you convert the whole system rather than add a pump you get benefit fro ALL the house not just the shower!

  5. Run it off the mains, the supply to you cold water tank is mains. Just put in a T section.

  6. NO JUST BUY A NEW SHOWER HEAD THE LARGER THE SHOWER HEAD THE GREATER POWER YOU LL HAVE I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AND IT NOW WORKS FINE

  7. To make sure you have enough water pressure, without a pump, the bottom of the cold water cistern should be at least 4 feet above the shower head.  Unless you are using an electric/gas shower, do NOT take the cold feed from the cold mains inlet pipe since all you will get from the shower is cold water.  It doesn't matter where your hot water tank is as long as you take cold water fron the cistern and hot water from the hot water tank.
