  1. Really all you need are a hammer and a pair of pliers, and a punch would come in handy.....but using the proper tools sure helps and keeps the parts from looking beat-up.

Check out the "repair help" section at http://www.parktool.com for great photos and instructions.  It's easy.    :o)

  2. I use a cotter pin press but it can be done fast and dirty...

Simply remove the nut from the cotter and :::smack::: the threaded end with a hammer. Probably a good idea to hold a piece of something between the cotter and the hammer to avoid smashing the cotter threads.

Fair warning... you might not be able to replace the crank and bottom bracket with a newer style. These things had a variety of shapes and sizes which are long obsolete.

  3. Tools you'll just need are :-

    Crank Puller

    Socket Wrench(14 mm)

    And possible some grease

Use the socket wrench to get the bolt out. Then crank puller to twist all the way into the crank socket and then twist once all the way in. Once all the way in, twist it anticlockwise and the crank will come out. Use grease t o make it easier if neccessary. And replace with new cranks doing the opposite to the above steps

    Hope i helped!

  4. You'll need a crank puller first and fore-most....Any other tool you may need, you probably already have. Crank puller can be up to 20 dollars.. Go to a local repair shop, make friends and ask if you can use their crank puller!

  5. Sheldon Brown is one of my favorite sites on bicycle info, some times you have to dig around a little.
