Do i need an appointment for a visa application to canada?

i'm going to the consulate in NYC. i'm an international student in the US and applying for a visitor's visa to go to Canada to visit a friend. also, if anyone knows what the wait time is, i would really appreciate it! thank you!

I would suggest calling them and asking directly.  If you are not an American citizen you may not be able to get a Visa there.  You may be considered a "third country applicant" and they may tell you that you can only get the Visa through the Canadian Embassy/High Commission in your native country.
