Do i need an electrician

I am want to change my consumer unit but, do i need an electrician to sign it off so i can sell my property

Not exactly sure what a consumer unit is, but my basic rule of thumb is this:  

If it can explode, electrocute, scald, leak or burn - leave it up to a professional.  

In many cases you have a liablity if you install something incorrectly and it results in harm of loss to a purchaser.
