  1. I don,t know if the laws have changed but I rented a car in Hamburg with just my USA license in 04.

  2. Yes you need a international license...AAA Insurance can sell you one for about $10.00...and they usually take the pic to. It is good for one year...and remember when they flash their lights...move over to the slow lane, some roads are VERY fast..Have fun!!

  3. If you are from the U.S (or other non-EU country) you will need an international license.  The only exception to this rule is if you are a member of the U.S. Forces, were stationed in Europe in the past, and your USAREUR license is still valid.

Most international drivers licenses are only valid for one year.  I know that in Germany you have to get one from the drivers license office (or is it the city? it's been 7 years since I had to get one).  In the states you may have to get one from your drivers license office as this is an official document.  Not sure about the AAA thing posted.

Good luck !!  Oh, and be careful, please.  If you've never driven in Germany before, don't try and get on the Autobahn and drive 150mph.  I've been over here for going on 20 years and I see accidents on the Autobahn all the time.  90% of those are caused by non-Germans that want to feel the rush of the Autobahn.  There is nothing wrong with feeling the rush, it's the sudden stop that will get people killed.

  4. Your local driver's license is good in Germany for 90 days.  Once that time is up, you will have to have obtained either a German driver's license (expensive) or an international driver's license.

Personally, I recommend getting the International driver's license before coming to Germany.
