UK and Irish Immigration do not require a passport for travelling between UK and Ireland. Unfortunately, the airlines request it for security, so yes.

But if you got the Holyhead-Dublin ferry, anything with a photo will do, such as a driving licence or student card, and you usually don't get asked for it.

epi -  a few years ago I went Manchester-Dublin - gf had no passport. Ryan Air said they would waive her need to have one if she could show proof she was Irish. Recently, after taking a ferry to Dublin, my brother was told by a policeman at Holyhead to "get some ID next time!" - with the airlines they make their own security rules.

No - provided you are a citizen of the UK or ROI. Yes otherwise.

But you will need photo id for security checks - you need to check what your airline will accept. They differ. For instance, Ryanair will accept a photo driving licence for this flight.

Had to give Ed and Co thumbs ups for making critical points of difference between what Govs want and what airlines want - passport preferred ID though UK driving license should be okay.

If you're going Easyjet then bring a tent to camp there the night before and check in the second their desk opens (see my question in travel tonight) as you will need every minute left to complete processing through Security and get to Gate before random closure time of day is decided.  Of course if the airline leaves late they will apologise and that will make everything alright.  Yeah.

A friend's son was travelling to Edinburgh from Belfast on Easyjet last week and ALL the flights to several locations were being processed through ONE desk, ONE check-in clerk - he had the same slow Security processing as I did and made the Gate only by the skin of his teeth - no thanks to lack of staffing at Security and Easyjet.

the above answer is incorect as i travelled to/from dubiln- east mids at the weekend. We were with ryanair who do require it for ID, however I saw pwople go through passport control in Dublin simply showing their boarding card proving flight was from UK rather that getting passport out. Also, returning to Eat Mids, there was no one on passport control atall when coming through immigration, straight through to baggage! This concerned me a bit as I thought someone could have sneaked into the UK via Ireland, so much for the upped security! If you have a passport take it, safer bet, as someone else stated, it depends on airline. But legally, UK-Ireland, no not neccessary.

All above answers are out of date - the rules changed about 2 years ago.

Now, everyone needs a passport to enter Ireland, except for a few cases. The immigration police will ask for a passport.

The only other option is a full drivers license. But you can only use this if you were born in the UK before 1983. If you were born abroad or after 1983, your drivers license cannot be used as evidence of citizenship.
