We are making two twin bed frames with wooden slates. Because we are moving soon we are low on money we have one mattress and are going to find another one at a yard sale of something. Will it be necessary to buy box spring. We don't want to because they are expensive, but do we need to.

  1. I made my own foundation for our mattress. I made it out of oak boards. It is so much stronger than a store bought foundation, and harder too. My point is, no you don't need box springs.

  2. Plywood or OSB base for a matress will work just fine. You may have to install supports underneath, but I'm sure you can figure that out.

Next thing...a yard sale matress? YEEKS! Really? I can't imagine sleeping on someone else's matress...well, maybe I can, but only for one night.

  3. The box spring is for support and comfort. You could have a piece of 1/2" plywood cut to fit the frames and put the mattress on top of that.
