US insurance does not work in Mexico.   Very stupid to drive in Mexico without insurance.   In an accident you can be held in jail while fault and financial responsibility is figured out

Getting insurance is not only a good idea but a requirement. Last thing you want to do is end up in a Mexican jail. At the link below is a site with a very detailed insurance plan. This includes legal assistance, medical evacuation and plane tickets home if your car is stolen in Mexico for example and you need to get home.

First of all.....if you plan on renting a car while in Mexico....good luck......I have lived here almost two years and still can't figure out the roads here.  Second.....you better make d**n sure you take out the additional insurance or you will pay double when you return your car.  An extra 100.00 for a scratch......just anything they can find.  Third......just know that most people here do not have insurance.....so guess what......you might be paying for a lot of stuff you never thought about if you have any kind of accident.  Fourth....people drive crazy here.........so watch out!!!!
