  1. In Great Britain, if a vehicle is on a public road, even if it is not being used, it is required to be taxed, MOT'ed and insured.  By law.

  2. Yes...because as the owner of the car, if whoever hits or kills someone with that car you are on the hook.

You can avoid this by doing a bill of sale and transfer the registration over to your buddy. Once he is done borrowing the car move it back to you.

  3. you only need insurance if you are in a accident

  4. In the state where I live, WA, if a vehicle is on the road, off of private property, it has to be licensed and insured even if not being driven. This does NOT apply to a vehicle on private property. I know. I am in the process of rebuilding 2 Ford pickup trucks. Neither is registered or insured, except through my homeowners insurance the same way as my household property. Both are on my driveway in front of my garage and it pisses off my next door neighbor, who is claiming it is lowering property values. He has even gone so far as to make out a complaint about "abandoned" vehicles 3 times over the past two years that I have working the project. The thing is, a vehicle on private property is exempt from being abandoned... however, if I had my trucks on the side of the road instead of ,on my private property, my neighbors complaint would have resulted in the vehicles being towed. The WA state rule is, move it or lose it, if it is parked for 72 hours in one spot on public roads or property.

  5. If it's on the public highway aka the road, it must be insured. It makes no difference whether or not you intend to drive it.

  6. Yes.  They have insurance that just covers a vehicle that is not being driven.  What if someone hit it or a tree fell on it?  Hail? Also you need to check how long you can keep it out there on the roadside. Some police ticket a car that they notice has been sitting too long.

  7. If it's on the road, it must be licensed and insured.

  8. May vary by state and city,  but normally you need liability insurance only to drive the car.

But......  if your car is on  the street,  and is hit by another uninsured driver,  you will be faced with repairing the car out of your pocket and trying to recover the loss in court.   Most of those without insurance aren't worth suing.    Your car can also be declared a hazard by the police and towed without warning,  or you can face a suit for placing a hazard on the public street.
