Do i need insurance to drive?

I am 18 from London and am learning to drive. If i was driving my parents cars with a valid provisional and L plates would i be in trouble if i were stopped. Note that my parent would be with me and that they have tax,mot and insurance

Not sure about England, but in the USA all cars must be insured, else punishable by suspension of license or jail time, for repeat offenders.
