All shops and bars take US currency. However, the peso exchange yesterday was 10.80 to the US dollar. You get a bit more for your money with the exchange.

The shops will take Us currency. Almost all of you cruise port cities will take US money its if you go out of that city and in to the surrounding towns that you may need to have that country's currency.
