Do i need root canal treatment?

about 6 months ago i had a filling fall out,

i haven't been to have it fixed because i am not working and not receiving benefits to some odd circumstances, so i cannot get it on the NHS. even though it would cost me £200 even if i could but that's another question/rant, lol.

there is a hole going up in my tooth, it doesn't hurt and there is no swelling/abscess etc. (except for pain when i eat) but i am worried as i learn you can die from an infection if there is one. don'tnt really have the money for even thexaminationon let alone the filling. do you think i need RCT and if i do is there anywhere i can get it done cheaper. will antibiotics 'cure' it for a bit?

any advice appreciated.

  1. With a hole in your tooth, I would think you would want to get something done. Sounds like a root canal is what will be recommended. To make it a little cheaper, ask about having to tooth pulled out. I was faced with having a root canal, my doctor said that a root canal will only last (at most) 5-10 years. He suggested tooth removal. It was cheaper and now I don't have any problems.

  2. Only your dentist will be able to tell you if you need RCT. I had a filling fall out and there was no pain or discomfort whatsoever, but when I went to the dentist it was in serious need of work because infection had set in. No pain doesn't mean there is no infection. Everyones mouth is full of all kinds of bacteria and any gaps in your teeth are perfect breeding grounds for all manner or nastiness.

Find out if there is a dental hospital in your area or even a regular hospital will give you dental treatment for serious jobs. I had my wisdom teeth taken out in a regular hospital and RCT at a dental hospital. But get to your dentist and get it looked at pronto.

I know you say you can't afford it, but ask for an emergency appointment, a filling falling out warrants an emergency appointment, and ask on the phone about costs and NHS treatment.

    Good luck with this.

  3. if you go to a dentist you have been going to for years --- they will fix it -- then make payments on it. if it doesn't hurt that bad it doesn't need a root canal .... you would know if it did.

  4. I have had a lot of dental problems like this, and have a couple root canals. If you need a root canal, you would feel a lot of pain with hot and cold drinks or food and you could form an abcess. Also, if most of the tooth is still in contact they can usually fill it again. My dentist said if you brush and floss regularly, you slow down the process of decay a lot, until you can afford to see a dentist.  Good luck!!

  5. well since you have had your filling out 6 months back so chances are more of your tooth needing  RCT treatment!

you need to consult a  dentist for that ! As far as expenses are concerned you can try out  dental schools which provide  efficient treatment in considerably economic prices and sometimes even for  free! you can also try for  camps sponsored by government or dental schools also!

For time  being you can take  Tab Amoxicillin 500mg thrice  for three days! tab ibuprofen twice  daily for  five  to six days! this  can aid in relieving for  few days but you need to consult the  dentist after that as they alone  wont be of help!

  6. I had a small gap (from a previous filling not filled correctly) that kept getting food stuck in it. Eventually it led to an abscess which i still put off going to the dentist for treatment.

Finally i went and after trying 2 types of antibiotics (2nd was the one u can't drink alcohol, forget the name) was told that it would be best i had the tooth removed. As i wasn't keen on this she then said she would try to save it by performing root canal treatment to which i agreed.

90 minutes in a dentist chair is definitely no fun and neither is being £100 lighter for that session. The tooth was saved for now and the abscess amazingly cleared completely.

I have heard that abscesses can also form beneath the gum inside your jaw which are much more difficult to treat.

Don't put it off any longer or you'll likely lose the tooth or be out of pocket even more.

Btw, i didn't go to the dentist cos i have a slight phobia but dread losing teeth even more haha!

  7. well i suggest that you find a dental school in your area. generally students that are learning to be dentists their prices are less and you still have someone oversee their work. You should really get it filled because you are still eating and drinking foods and I'm sure no toothbrush can go up there that you have to clean it well up into the tooth. I think you should get it done and it will give you peace of mind. Even if you have to put it on your credit card do that or ask if they can work with you for some payment plan.
