Do i need to cut my bird's wings again?

i've had a parakeet since this march.

it likes sitting on my shoulder, but it doesnt come to me when i call it all the time. just sometimes, when it feels like it :P

so i'm a lil worried that when its wings grow back, it'll accidentally fly away(i live in a 6 story apartment) or bump into a glass wall and die of a concussion.

do you think i'll need to cut it again?

  1. yes you do need to cut them if you want it to sit on your shoulder otherwise it will fly away and then u will lose him or her but you only have to cut one side but not to much

  2. I own a free flighted lovebird but its very nerve wracking for any owner with a flighted bird in the house. I feel terrible when i clipped his wings for the first time and after that i swore i would never take that freedom again from him. I do sympathize with you for being squeamish around a flying bird and clipping his wings your self. There are plenty of choices you can choose that might be safer. You could, when his flights grow in bring him to a vet who will clip them for you or teach you how to do it. There are also bird shops that do this but i don't advise it since the risk of disease spreading is very high. You can also train him if your willing to do so while his wings are still clipped which might make it easier for you to keep control of him if you choose to let him fly freely. When my lovie out of his cage, he flies and sits on my shoulder. I keep all of my shades closed and close the doors to all the rooms which might prevent escape or injury. I also have mirrors which i cover up or i don't clean which prevents my lovie form flying into him. But its all up to you whether you choose free flight or clip him or her. Though me personally, couldn't do clip him again plus flying is beneficial to their respiratory system. If you need more help please feel free to contact me with more info :) GOOD LUCK!

o.. and one more thing, if you do choose to clip them, clip the first 4 or 5 flights, parakeets are very light small birds so even with a clip they can still get off the ground with a good breeze. Don't just clip a couple of both sides bc this will expose the other flights and they might break without the support of the other flights if he falls.

  3. yes i would for safety. a lot of people wont agree with wing clipping mainly breeders. i agree totally i clip my birds wings easy for handling them too ... but just clip 2 feathers each side . other people may say clip more off i dont no . hope this helps

  4. You probably should cut them again just from other dangers around the home. If you don't feel comfortable about cutting your parakeets wings you could ask a vet to do it.  Some exotic vets do it just make sure to call them first.

I lost one of my birds because we didn't know how to trim its wings and it flew away one day.

  5. yes trim the wings every 6 months.  Do not take the bird outside, as with clipped wings they can still muster up enough strenght to fly away if they are scared..

  6. Yes i would suggest you did, for safety.

  7. First of all, i got a cockatiel, 4 months ago. And they said his wings were clipped, but they were'nt. So he could fly, he still went on my shoulder.

And hands and arm, and i would always close the blind.

But, for your safety you should clipp them.

    Goodlucl
