I format the disc, but when i press record, the word 'pause' appears on the recorders display, and won't disappear for a matter of minutes, resulting in that part not being recorded

  1. No, you don't have to format it.

  2. Since a DVD- or +r is not rewritable.  It's a one shot, one time write.   So, no, it's not formatted but just information is written on it.

If you're having problems with making a successful DVD that another player can read, write it at the slowest speed you can.

I've read that some of these recordable  DVDs are nothing but land fill and you may not know what is what until after you buy them.

  3. try using different recording software, you shouldn't need to format a dvd-r, you can also look at how you have setup your current software

  4. There is no need to format DVD-R (or DVD+r) discs. The only ones you need to format are the rewritable discs, ie RW.

  5. You don't say what recorder you are using, but my Pioneer is set up to automatically initialise a blank disk on insertion. That takes a couple of minutes, then it's ready to go. Are you allowing enough time for the disk to initialise?. You can't just stick a disk in and record straight away like VHS
