Hi, I just turned 16 on the 20th and already thinking about driving. Some of my friends said that I need to pass/finish Driver's Ed to be able to take the Written Test at the DMV. Is this true or no?

I am 16, in the State of California.

  1. I personally live in California and the answer is yes.

You need to pass/finish driver's ed before you take the written test.

You also need proof  that you paid for behind the wheel course.

  2. in mn you need to get your blue card (passing driver's ed) to take you permit written test

  3. Well when I was 15 I had to take a permit test.  After I passed that I had to take 4 weeks of classroom and behind the wheel classes.  Now I have to wait 9 months before I can get take the actual license exam, (and get 50 hours of behind the wheel).  But Illinois is so strict.

  4. i live in wisconsin, and you dont need to pass drivers ed before you can take it, you need to get the application filled out by your teacher and tehn you can go and take it. you dont need to finish the class first.

  5. In my state, you take your written test to get your permit right when you turn 16.
