Do i need to reserve the seats for Trenitalia train?

Question

The price for seat only is E28.50 and if need to reserve is E31.50.

We are a group of 6 people and is taking the night train from Milan - Rome and Rome - Venice.

Is it necessary to book the seat? Or we just need to check in earlier at the train stations to book a seat?

I'm from Singapore, i dont know which seat no should i choose
