  1. I'm asasuming that the room was done to code, in other words, they used green board for bathrooms rather than plain sheetrock, and that there is something on the walls now? You don't have to use a waterproof primner, but I would buy some good stuff, like 1-2-3 or Kilz, and ideally, have the primer tinted to match the final top coat color. And I would use an oil based paint so that it is scrubable and will resist moisture and mildew. Going to take a while longer to dry, but werll worth the inconvenience.

  2. You shouldn't need to prime, unless you are painting over new drywall, or drastically changing the color.  If you are painting over a gloss finish, you may want to wash the walls with TSP to make make the paint adhere better.  Hope this helps.

  3. I don't agree with what the others are saying. It never hurts to use it. Some times water marks don't show up for a couple of months. It also makes paint go on much smoother. Just my personal experience.

  4. I've never primed but I do use semi-gloss.
