    Private sale or dealer sale?

    Was the dealer sale, brokered consignment or dealer owned?

  3. Typically, in Canada,  taxes will be paid to the broker at the time of sale.  If the transaction is private, tax usually isn't collected at that time.

    What does happen is that the provincial or federal government will check licenses and registration transfers that have been occurred back to the last time they made the same check.  When these are cross-referenced with the tax files, any of these transfers that don't show taxes paid (based on their records) will have a PST or GST bill sent to the new owner for collection.

  4. Not if it's a private sale. If you buy it retail from a marina or boat dealer under the law he has to charge sales tax & has a license to do so. If it's a cash deal with a private owner there is no sales tax involved. If he says you have to pay it ask to see his provincial sales tax license. He may be trying to make a few extra bucks...
